Let me keep it simple

Undressing youself, The echo effect

Once in a while, it's essential to break away, have a debut in the unmined, and see a poignant reflection on the losses brought about by obstinate sedentation. A chance to peer beneath the surface of the familiar and cultivate a reverse-engineered outlook that melds everyday experiences from moving parts into a new synergy of working parts. Along the way, you encounter the full spectrum of life's emotions: clarity, suspense, dilemma, manifestation, humor, pain, and epiphany. It's a divorce from lingering desires, a moment to appreciate life's subtleties as if measured by a teaspoon, with the finesse of an artist's touch upon tender fingertips. So, step out, catalog the mental inventory of your thoughts, and allow yourself to indulge in the richness of existence to find out what sparks joy.

During a random walk late last year, I encountered an individual who struck up a conversation seemingly out of nowhere. He shared an observation about how Africans tend to overlook and underappreciate the milestones they achieve in life, implying a lack of adequate recognition and reward. While I couldn't ascertain whether this perspective was racially bigoted against African people, it resonated with a certain truth that was difficult to refute entirely. Our dialogue was prompted by the sight of a recent graduate walking home with a female companion. It sparked a conversation that unfolded against the backdrop of a late afternoon stroll, a routine I customarily indulged in at that time of day.

Several weeks after our initial encounter, I crossed paths with the chap again in a different locale, again ambulating. In the unspoken code of men, names are rarely exchanged, so I've dubbed him T Makeli. A moniker that makes you want to list down things when you read or hear that name. Maybe he is a farmer, a mechanic, a potter, a barber, or a caretaker. Upon greeting him, it was clear from his perplexed look that he was wondering why a stranger was acknowledging him. He didn't immediately recognize me or recall our previous interaction. Unlike those who might explain such a situation, I chose not to elaborate, sensing his overwhelming confusion. His look reminded me of the guileless bewilderment of a child who can't quite remember where they've seen you before, despite a sense of familiarity.

I recall T Makeli sharing with me that their family was accustomed to eating traditional vegetables ("mboga za kienyeji"), and whenever he passed an exam, his mother would prepare omena for them to celebrate the achievement. This was the delicacy they craved, the one they eagerly waited for with bated breath. Poverty might have been their portion, but this simple pleasure was sensational.

In my childhood, being rewarded for achievements was uncommon. My upbringing dictated that attending school and passing exams was simply part of life's routine. A vivid memory I have is of the time I invited my parents to a medium-high-end restaurant, a place we often visited to enjoy the ambiance after school with my fellow pupils. As we perused the menu, my father immediately remarked on the steep prices, leading us to depart in favor of a more affordable eatery, despite his initial agreement to explore the establishment.

In light of this, I concluded that this man was strapped for cash. Luxury was not his portion. His approach to life seemed to mirror his financial situation. Which I assumed was anchored on the hardness of a minimalism and a frugality on steroids. In contrast, I've adopted a different perspective on my life's philosophy. I've embraced a reward system for myself. Whenever I achieve a significant milestone, I prioritize celebrating before considering any repercussions. While these festivities might seem typical, they are intentional and richly merited. They are moments of discovery that transform into cherished memories. They involve going to the club, savoring my favorite whiskey—Jack Daniels—and enjoying it with friends. It's a departure from the usual drinks we're accustomed to, but I find it adds a special touch to the occasion.

Many individuals tend to purchase tangible items. Conversely, I allocate minimal time to such visible entities. For instance, while others have upgraded to smart TVs, I continue to use a traditional television set, which adorns my wall without a connection to an aerial or set-top box. Its use is limited to monthly occasions when I connect it to my laptop, primarily to enjoy music. For yours truly, the true value of a purchase is derived from the immersive experience it provides, rather than its frequency of use.

Anticipating life's unpredictability is something I've come to enjoy. Despite attempts to plan my days, I find myself drawn to spontaneity and the thrill of unexpected experiences. Structured schedules don't just work. While I appreciate the concept of investing in items that can grow in value over time, I find words to be more captivating given their ability to evoke emotion. My style of composition is variant, sometimes vibrant and lively, other times direct and succinct.

In my opinion, there is a significant correlation between the desire for the fine things in life and the quest for attaining them. Being nurtured in an environment that fosters success often propels individuals towards prosperity, assuming there is no settling for mediocrity. This is the crux of existence. The tendency to fulfill only average expectations is our tipping point. That may even apply to tots. Kids are like sponges, soaking up what we tell them. If they never hear they can achieve greatness, they might just settle for "good enough." And that's how mediocrity becomes the norm. It is our role to make the possibilities appear attainable. And it applies even to adults.

We often settle for less due to various reasons. It could stem from fear that our efforts won't be appreciated or rewarded adequately. It might also be a result of having a limited mindset or lacking the confidence to ask for what we truly deserve. Many of us find ourselves in this situation because we haven't been encouraged to expect more and strive for better.

Random Musings

April heralds the season of showers. A time when the sky is packed tight with grey, pregnant clouds. The dark afternoon formations suddenly leave a mysterious canvass in the blue sky, and the bright hue swiftly evanescent with no prior notice. The onset of rain brings with it an air of positivity. It's the rythymic drumming of raindrops for me; how they impinge upon the earth releasing a natural aroma, and filling the air with a delicious scent. There's a palpable sense of delight when you're snug in bed and the downpour begins, your heart palpitates with joy expectant of splendid slumber. It's a sign that you will have an awesome night, rich with the sounds and scents that you long for. The rain ushers in serene peace and sobriety, offering a harmonius blend of calm and a hint of sensuality during the ambrosial hours. A juxtaposed palette of real tranquillity with a sultry feel.

As usual, the rains presents the perfect time to indulge in a steaming cup of tea. One that is delicately light and creamy with a hint of mint, ushering in cherished moments and wrapping around the neck like a warm scarf. The mug that you tightly grip with your hands, and the warmth sinks into the bones. It provides a little solace, with the steam rising across the face to spread warmth on the nose and cheeks. The drink provides a momentary escape, a soothing elixir that transports you beyond the shadows of the past, the discomfort of the present, and the uncertainties of the future. Sometimes, I take a gander through the window to observe the straight, silvery, and smooth streaks spiral into a torrent of deluge. How the heavy, hopeless raindrops strike and seep through every crevice, leaving a feeling of adhesion and cohesion. The way flashes of lightning precede a long thunderous sound like some grand piano, then it settles into a continuous soft rumble. The way thunder can terrify with significance and have an overwhelming scope. You feel like the current ebullient regularity should continue irrespective of it giving vibes of a beautiful, delicate crass.

At the year's outset, I found myself striding through the rain. January panned out differently. I had somehow mistaken the gravity of the situation, hardly noticing the clouds were converging in a confident sky. I fondly recall how cool breezes coursed into transparent eddies. The winds shifted from soft to strong in less than a minute, roaming at large like an unannounced visitation. Vulnerability sets in once the heavens open to let fine drops furiously outpour in an unmetered way. The sudden torrents force you to shelter under an extended balcony, as the narrow streets are further constricted by balconies that jut out, encroaching upon the space ordinarily reserved for roads. As the rain intensifies, people vanish as if by magic, revealing our collective apprehension of the rain. I met a certain lovely young lass, fresh out of high school, who engaged me in a conversation, and she wanted to be employed. She was an irrelevant teen I felt like I could fall in love with. I had to highlight that part for no apparent reason. She expressed a desire to engage in honest and legitimate work, eschewing the path of illicit endeavors like working as a stripper. My encounter took place in Githurai, a locale unfairly stigmatized by a reputation for crime and substandard housing. Although crime is prevalent in the area, I have always remained unscathed, feeling safe walking on the cabro-paved roads during the day.

After showing signs that the rains were going to subside, I decided to saunter back to my crib. When it rains for a while, it feels like freshness is poured back to earth, resulting in a new creation. The solemn thunder has tremendous powers in the way it roars, evoking raw power during the aftermath of rain. I had to cover a distance of about 2 kilometres, and I was thoroughly soaked to the skin by the time I arrived in the house. I chose to straddle back instead of vehicular motion. I didn’t care, though. I took in the sight of how the ivy clustered on the walls of solitary residences and the lurid marsh green grass blades lined the curb. Huge drops of rain smote my face in earnest. The liquid spines soaked my hair and poured down my forehead, running down to blind my eyes and stream from my nose. My lenses blurred and I could not see clearly as tiny raindrops did not provide enough oomph to overcome water’s tendency to adhere to the glass. After it all I went back to the devoted warmth, the well-disposed threat of familiarity of my house. I realized am not a pluviophile.

Five horses and The Belgian Draught

The world is a marketplace of ideas and it all depends on how you put across your opinion. If you are convincing and believable, people will buy into your ideas and adopt them as the gospel truth even though they may be full of half-truths, falsehoods, and propaganda. That is the reason why a lie told many times ends up as a credential.

The infallibility of human nature is the reason why we have to allow dissenting ideas that we would not since it would be like being muzzled in a way. I am not an expert in matters of opinion and I would love to learn how people reason. The way you convince others that perhaps this is how matters are and that is how they should be henceforth.

It's the thought process that matters in our endeavors. What you think is what you become and society comes in to assist in propagating that ideology. We make simple the complex and the converse is also true. The rationale with which you approach an issue is the reason why it may fail or succeed depending on the input you put into it.

I won't say that I am lethargic as a person, but I seemingly find myself in a situation where I just do not feel like doing what I should have done prior. Time is moving fast and age will catch up. When it does, you will look back and feel like you should have made strides in your life. Which may be impossible to reserve. For instance, a 60-year-old who would have loved to be a teacher may find herself unable to do so because the circumstances do not allow it due to age advancement.

Every day when I wake up, I have wished I could adhere to the 5 am club rule. I have not yet read the book on how to harness genius-grade productivity and use it as a companion for a life lived beautifully. It does not feature among the books I would love to engross myself to find value and pursue as a life tenet. Maybe I read it and see if it applies in my case. If it does not, like most of the good books I have read, they become gems in my daily composition.

Whether it is me or most people are apathetic, I have no idea. I am one type of person who has to sometimes force myself to do what I do not want yet I have routinely done in the past. It is waking up in the morning, time management, and the whole issue of being disciplined and remaining committed to a course.

Luckily, all is not lost because when I decide to engage, I fully get immersed in the action and forget about the world around me for a few minutes before I think about the need to connect again with the rest of the world. The world is a stage, and we have various characters in it. You resign to the fate that life presents since that is the life you have somehow got used to. Once you have resigned to fate and let the situation take its course, there is a high likelihood you will never fully recover if you take no immediate action.

Sometimes, I find I just want to let go. Sometimes, I lose hope and feel like what I am doing is not worth the struggle. The good thing is that it comes after I have finished what I need to do and pondering on what to do next. The next day, I wake up fresh and go back to start again because it is good to be back to what you normally do. And you passionately pursue the endeavor like you have started afresh.

The worst is when you decide to take a break and create the impression you will consider taking up from where you left. That is a fallacy that we engage in and more often than not the outcome is, that you end up leaving it to the dogs. There is a high chance even if you pick up from where you left off, you will not achieve the same outcome.

The Job Market Queasiness

Securing my first job felt like stumbling upon a coveted opportunity, akin to discovering a rich platinum deposit. The murky world of employment is laborious and tough. Jobs are transient, and the sheer pith of comfort is what we should strive to overcome. You discover there is more to a career than just a paycheck. You need to be in constant motion. Interestingly, I've observed a widespread appreciation for local cuisine. As a nation, we aspire to have locally curated eateries selling standard recipes. The challenge lies in operationalizing the outfit to transform it into a franchise. This would involve opening multiple branches funded by local investors, akin to how citizens eagerly invest in government bonds and bills.

Honesty and integrity are paramount in the job market. Transparency and a clean professional record are non-negotiable. While practical skills and experience hold weight, academic qualifications often become crucial, especially in competitive scenarios. A degree may seem trivial until it becomes a prerequisite for a desired position. Strong academic credentials not only demonstrate a foundation of knowledge but also a dedication to learning and growth. Education should be seen as an investment in acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in your career path.

I fondly recall the days when I eagerly aspired to be associated with a corporate entity. This was my take on the typical path; transitioning into the workforce, drawing a salary, and embracing adult responsibilities. Often, the next phase is succeeded by matrimony, followed by family planning. Then come the goals of purchasing a car, building a house, and investing for the future. It's a familiar lifestyle that many of us are accustomed to.

Landing a job marked the initial stride in my quest to achieve the goals I had set forth. A decade has flown by since my graduation, and the picture is quite different from what I had envisioned. The milestones of owning a car, getting married, and buying a house remain on my to-do list, illustrating that life's journey often takes unexpected turns.

Certainly, I care, albeit not with the expected intensity. There are moments when I ponder if I've missed out on fulfilling certain expectations during the opportune times. There was an opportunity for marriage that I let slip away, hindered by deep-seated apprehensions. Perhaps, at that juncture, marriage didn't seem like the right path for me. As for finances, I tend to spend freely, without much thought. I value experience over possessions. You might be conflicted to think I indulge in excess and enjoy savoring life's pleasurable moments.

Looking back, I realize there's not much I can claim as my own, and surprisingly, it doesn't weigh heavily on my mind. Even the laptop I'm currently using isn't mine; it's on loan from the company. I used to own some laptops but chose to distribute them for free. Now, with this company-issued equipment, I'm restricted from installing software. Should I attempt to do so, it would trigger an alert to the administrators.

If you catch the attention of hawk-eyed admins, they won't hesitate to hold you accountable for violating company policies. And that means being under the radar. The framework that companies employ to safeguard their infrastructure is exceptionally robust and complex. It encompasses a vast array of measures that sometimes I find myself thinking, "I will utilize whatever access rights I have been granted. Beyond that, life continues."

The primary reason we interview for jobs is to secure a source of income. However, it's considered inappropriate to directly express this to the recruiter by saying, "I'm here for the money." Such a statement could jeopardize your chances during the interview process. Consequently, many candidates refrain from showing too much enthusiasm and adopt a more reserved demeanor until an offer is extended. If successful, you accept the offer; otherwise, decline courteously.

As a corporate employee, I am obligated to comply with the company's rules and regulations. This often entails maintaining a modest and cooperative attitude. In many cases, voicing concerns or asserting oneself, especially regarding compensation, is not advisable unless your contributions are recognized and valued by the employer. If you have demonstrated significant value to the organization, that could provide stronger grounds to leverage for fair compensation. Conversely, if the company has played an instrumental role in your professional development, your treatment and compensation will likely align with their standards and expectations. You have not shown ingenuity in small matters.

There will be a point where, as an employee, you will quiver with revulsion. You may have entered the workforce with high hopes, believing that your qualifications and certifications would secure you a favorable position and pay. Yet, unexpectedly, you find yourself in a role that's worlds apart from what you envisioned, tasked with beginning afresh. At that point shadows of gloom loom over your destiny, far removed from the deal you thought you made. You feel like you are in a conundrum. The intensity of the situation is so clear and so plausible. However, despite the turmoil, there's a sense of calm that settles in when the day is done.

Some, like yours truly, are trapped in a state of inertia, unable to muster the courage to update their resume. The thought of revising it feels daunting and overwhelming, akin to a bitter taste or something apocalyptic. There is beauty in brevity. The entire process of job applications is rife with regret, making it a dreadful endeavor. It has created a fallacy of inflexibility and the danger of being indoctrinated that jobs are hard to find.  You feel like you are in trouble, floundering in a swamp and you need an employer to throw a rope your way to save you from drowning. It can feel like being stuck in quicksand, desperately waiting for an employer to extend a lifeline. In a bid to escape this rut, you might consider hiring a recruiter to revamp your resume and usher in positive energy. There's often the allure that a new employer will offer greener pastures and a better working environment.

Just do nothing

The societal pressure to live up to certain standards can feel overwhelming. When faced with challenges that seem insurmountable, it's okay to step aside momentarily and restrategize. You may strive to adopt the best coping mechanisms, but societal expectations often loom beyond your control. Life throws a lot at us, and it's important to prioritize your well-being because mental health is crucial.  Focus on what works, take time to recharge if need be, and come back stronger.

Life is full of symbols, waiting for us to interpret their meaning. Sometimes, a seemingly negative event – an accident, illness, pandemic, or even a societal tragedy – can serve as a metaphor for a new chapter. These experiences don't have to be fatal to have a profound impact on our lives. They can also leave a positive mark and strengthen our worldview.

As we journey through life, we encounter a myriad of experiences that shape our acceptance of change. Friendships fade, and those we once held dear can become distant, reflecting the transient nature of life. In life, some cherished bonds may wilt, and new connections blossom. Permanence and constancy are rare commodities that are often elusive and rarely present. This impermanence prevents us from becoming mired in outdated beliefs and practices. While some past ideals may seem superior to those we now hold, most evolve to reflect society's present realities, ensuring we continue to progress and adapt to the times.

There comes a time when doing nothing is essential, an integral part of our desired lifestyle. Sleep, a vital component of our existence, exemplifies this perfectly. It's a time of complete inactivity that fuels our activity. Life, too, throws us a lifeline of pause in the form of quiet moments. You can imagine the calming sound of crashing waves or rain softly tapping on a silent night. They are interludes that offer a hiatus, a chance to halt momentarily before you plunge into the flurry of activity again. It's natural to take this time to rest and reflect, processing our experiences before moving forward. Prioritize rest.

Society demands constant engagement, leaving little room for stillness. To keep up, we're compelled to align ourselves with the pace of our social circles, eager to match their industriousness. Everyone moves at their rhythm, and that's perfectly okay. This fast-paced environment inevitably leads us to shed connections with those who struggle to keep pace. We may even mock them, as not worthy of the rigorous challenge of survival of the fittest. Maybe it's our obsession with achievement. Life isn't just about keeping up with the Joneses.

The world is a constant hum of activity, with individuals tirelessly working to provide us with the comfort and convenience we enjoy. However, even the most well-designed products and systems are susceptible to unforeseen threats and challenges. Researchers and developers must continually adapt and refine their creations to align with the evolving demands and mitigate potential risks.

It's a common misconception that tranquility and inner peace equate to indolence. You feel the need to be occupied to validate your productivity. Hell No! The circumstances we face are diverse. You don't have to appear exhausted to have a reason to pause. If you're facing continuous obstacles in life and struggling to progress, it might seem counterintuitive, but sometimes the best action is inaction. It doesn't mean you're giving up or failing. Just relax, be idle for a while, and breathe. Remember, taking a breather won't harm you.

One of the cornerstones of humanity is to be engaged. Action over idleness. Yet, irrespective of being active or passive, the only one who cares about our actions is us. The average chap is wired to be seeking to achieve a goal or what you want. We are in a rat race but rarely do we stop to ask questions whether the struggle is truly worthwhile.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to counsel my younger brother, who craved independence. 'Emancipation of Mimi.' He felt overshadowed and discouraged by labels of failure. However, I reassured him that failure is not definitive. We all stumble but the number of times we pick up is what counts.

In today's society, it's not uncommon to encounter a considerable number of people who appear listless or are just there, "wako tu." Just the other day, I was discussing with a friend about a striking comparison: the vast population of Africa, exceeding a billion, against that of Microsoft with a workforce of just over 200,000. It's quite astonishing that Microsoft has a market capitalization that outstrips the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Africa.  Microsoft's success didn't come overnight; it required grit and perseverance, starting from humble beginnings to becoming refined over time. This comparison raises a thought-provoking question: Are those 200,000 employees more productive than an entire continent of one billion Africans? The key lies in unity, teamwork, and focused effort among other variables made over the years, which have culminated in the success and productivity of entities like Microsoft.

This is nonsensical gen that requires no action on your part. Simply absorb it and tembeza kubwa kubwa. Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new. Experience is what begets wisdom. Society may label you as indolent if you are jobless. On the flipside, if you are employed, people will expect generosity from you. Yet, it's about you. Not them. When you are going through a crisis, they will think that you are an attention-seeker. At such times, take time off and simply be who you are.

Hyperbolic discounting

Life is a constant dance of options, and the melody that resonates well with us is the one we waltz or gyrate to. The decisions we make shape the lifestyle we lead and, in turn, sway the path to satisfaction. Imagine ticking off life's checkboxes one by one, piecing together a beautiful mosaic of experiences. Each completed task adds a splash of color to the grand design. Unfortunately, life's rhythm is a complex tapestry of options. There is always the dilemma of juggling competing interests. A tough decision awaits when you are compelled to select amongst the myriad of prospects that life presents.

As rational beings, we often face the allure of immediate gratification, opting for the path laden with quick, modest rewards rather than the longer route promising substantial bounty. Quick wins! Sprints over marathons. This tendency equates to discounting the future and the broader possibilities of prosperity. After all, nobody knows about tomorrow. Hence our myopic tendencies.

Discipline stands as the cornerstone of our voyage through life. It empowers you to navigate any path you choose. Without it, you'll easily be swayed by fleeting desires, often veering onto the well-trodden path in pursuit of quick gratification. Honesty remains a non-negotiable virtue across all life's domains.

The circumstances we find ourselves in vary. You might find yourself in a field demanding utmost dedication. Some require you to have self-control and chart your destiny while others may afford more freedom and personal preference. Shortcuts might offer a temporary illusion of progress, but they often conflict with long-term aspirations. As the consequences of our choices materialize, the sting of regret tied to those decisions becomes all too clear.

In today's dynamic world, abundant opportunities await if you are willing to seize them. Strive to become the best version of yourself, shed habits that hinder your ability to compete, and embrace challenges, which can be a boomerang to bloom. You should dare to step outside your comfort zone and make the necessary sacrifices to develop your unique strengths. Don't let the prod that elicits defensiveness prevent you from doing what is right because it feels safe to be in a crowd.

As social creatures, we naturally gravitate towards the crowd. The concept of herd mentality is deeply rooted within us. It can hold an individual captive to collective decisions. You end up fearing the risk associated with independent decisions, which in turn leads you to succumb to the social proof bias. Consequently, this bias may amplify your situation, resulting in behavior akin to a sheep blindly following the flock. When one sheep leaps over an imaginary fence, the rest invariably follow suit.

Hyperbolic discounting refers to the tendency to opt for immediate pleasure at the expense of greater future benefits. This cognitive bias often leads to decisions that favor instant gratification over long-term gain. Although we often experience it, we may overlook it or adopt a dismissive attitude, "Whatever!" It's a challenge I've faced before, and this has impeded my ability to fully reap the fruits of my labor. Perhaps I sit on the fence a lot more than I should.

For example, you may aspire to hit the gym to achieve a certain physique, perhaps to feel confident when you look in the mirror, and to ward off lifestyle diseases. This decision marks one of the toughest challenges in your fitness journey. An ideal body is like a sculpture—it has to be chiseled for the outcome to be desirable.

Let's call it the "workout saga," you have to brace yourself for some serious grind, a process that requires improving your health through exercise and better nutrition. It entails making sacrifices and stepping out of your comfort zone into the unknown. This journey is strenuous and unavoidable, especially if you aim to rock that killer physique for life. But those delicious cookies in a nearby bakery might seem more tempting than the gym membership that promises long-term health benefits. Damn you wheat!

I can relate to the fitness journey. There was a time when I was super regimented, hitting the pavement for walks, busting out reps, and chugging water like it was going out of style (eight glasses weren't just a suggestion, it was my mantra). I didn't set specific targets or seek motivation, but after about a month, I hit the brakes. In my walking routine, I experimented with different sneakers and flip-flops until I found the ones that suited my trekking needs. I clocked a kilometer in a cool ten minutes. Initially, drinking water regularly was a challenge, so I spaced out my drinks and threw in some Himalayan salt to prevent frequent bathroom breaks and help in the retention of water in the body cells. But then, those spur-of-the-moment cravings hit, and I eventually succumbed to procrastination and lethargy, seeking alternative options when the initial enthusiasm waned. It's easy to abandon a results-oriented endeavor when a meliorating alternative presents itself.

Last year, I embarked on a journey of self-study. I kept my educational endeavors under wraps, hoping to wow those around me with my success. However, when the results rolled in, I had failed, leaving me feeling like crap and short of apocalyptic. Amid the shock and shame, I soldiered on. Reflecting on my study habits, I realized that my sessions weren't consistent. Despite pouring considerable hours into my studies, I often took fun breaks and indulged in weekly parties to break the monotony. Additionally, I skipped self-quizzes, which would've gauged my understanding. I discovered that taking more than a two-day break from studying frequently snowballed into a week-long hiatus, derailing my focus. Lesson learned. On to the next one.

We Live in Fear

"Have you ever felt like a voice quacking in the void?"

Well. That is how I feel regarding my blog. It can be quite isolating. The absence of readers makes it weak; updating it weekly makes it circuitous; and it's torturous when you have to sit down to create content that fails to create a sensory reality for the reader. Perhaps, participating in a competition could ignite a fresh trajectory!

You know what; lamentation has a scruffy charm of pacification.

It takes courage to acknowledge and deal with personal experiences, whether they are within your control or render you vulnerable. While you might be frustrated by unaccomplished aspects of your life, the ultimate truth is that writing provides the purest form of distillation. It has fulfillment. Whether your expression is tentative and tepid or colorful and cogent with an epic flow, it carries an intimate feeling—a kind of sexy, skin-to-skin vibe.

Ever felt like you wanted to come out of the closet but fear or timidity were holding you at ransom? You want to leap forward but suffer from the poison ivy of "What if I mess up?" Worse is, you start, get disillusioned, or derailed along the way, then forego to take action on what inspired you.

Regardless of whether fear stems from the external world or the people around us, it's crucial to recognize that you possess the power to make a choice. The decision to remain beholden to the damning situation or take action and change the circumstances remains yours. It is your responsibility to determine whether you wish to actively pursue your goals or let them fade away toward oblivion.

When you write as I do, the temptation to surrender is ever-present. You check the blog statistics, and the once-ascending curve now resembles a volatile cryptocurrency graph. The numbers game can feel disheartening, and engagement feels elusive. It seems like my content may click better with a specific audience I haven't reached yet. Or maybe I am preaching to the converted. Who approaches my articles with disdain, as if to say, "Make it quick, we have no time to waste?"

Nonetheless, there are moments when you revisit your blog, glance at it, and find yourself both breathless and deliriously happy; way past Cloud Nine. You can see the incredible progress you're making! It is commendable. Yet, there are those instances that tease and taunt. In those moments, it feels like the best course of action is to uphold your nobility.

The dancer in you yearns to enroll in a dance school to refine those seemingly awkward moves, rectifying the missteps that leave you feeling like you have two left feet. The writer within has crafted a manuscript. The only hurdle left is to conquer the fear of rejection and submit it to publishers. The orator within resists practicing speeches in front of a mirror, and the thought of exploring how telekinesis can enhance your bespoke and expressive vigor. These are the requisite experiences needed before stepping into the coliseum, one that is often unreceptive and can be both nerve-racking and emotionally draining.

The crucial skill required to combat fear is the ability to unpack the slightest traces of guilt or inferiority. The way infants face life's challenges without prejudice. What you would consider impossible as an adult. A video online captivated me, it featured a child who placed a hen on the carrier of his bicycle and pushed it forward, evoking memories of Mr. Nice's song 'Kuku Kapanda Baiskeli'. It brings to mind this line in Stephen King's book On Writing: "It ain't how much you've got, honey, it's how you use it," as the whore told the bashful sailor.

Doubt and fear often quell the rebellious spirit within that yearns for exploration. Inaction, if prolonged, can lead to a perpetual state of ruin, and the sole path to redemption lies in countering the inertia provoked by these apprehensions.

Coming out of the closet can be tough, especially when you worry about people's perceptions. You might wonder if you should adopt a don't-care attitude and ignore people's opinions or be humble and seek advice. You might worry about rejection or being judged. But remember, as the Chinese proverb goes, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Although the first steps might be the hardest, over time, they become more straightforward with a hint of complexity. Along the way, you will face challenges and obstacles. Without resilience, failure is inevitable. But if you persevere, self-discovery awaits.

This year, my primary focus is on content creation, not the blog's metrics. Blogging poses numerous challenges, from marketing to idea selection and conceptualization, crafting engaging introductions and conclusions, allocating time for composition, conducting research to reinforce concepts, and the mental drudgery involved in copyediting. The countless hours devoted to perusal for the final prose to have segue. It is natural to hesitate and cogitate, and in the process, get mortified by your efforts. You have to grapple with the notion that what you're painstakingly trying to master might feel somewhat embarrassing.

It's often said that time's a healer and atones for past mistakes. Without intending to sound like a Protestant evangelist, "Perhaps you are out there struggling with the urge to reignite your passion, kickstart your job search, or pursue your ambition, chaka chaka." The key is to start by taking small steps. The challenges will be dealt with as they arise along the way.

As always, "Keep on keeping on, and keeping on will keep you keeping on."

Déjà vu

"If the whole world is indebted, then who is the anonymous creditor?"

A common challenge that many people face is being burdened by debt. It traps you in a cycle of working solely to pay off loans and accumulated interest, and in the end, you are enslaved. The debt trap starts unconsciously and subtly. Small initial loans are irresistible, more so if you want to use them to take care of necessities. With time, they snowball into a vicious cycle of larger debt burdens.  This drive is typically motivated by the pursuit of material and tangible acquisitions, which, unfortunately, in certain instances, has led to severe repercussions, including loss of life, rather than fostering happiness and comfort.

I came across a story in a local tabloid, or maybe I heard it from someone, about a high-profile individual who amassed significant debt in his lifetime. Allegedly, one day, he chose to put an end to his financial woes by taking his own life. It remains unclear whether auctioneers seized his property after his demise or if they followed protocol to reclaim the outstanding debt owed to the creditor. Additionally, considering that credit from financial institutions is typically insured, upon an individual's demise, the outstanding advance is usually recovered from the insurance company.

An acquaintance recently confided in me that he was in trouble with some debt collectors and needed some money to pay them off. I sympathized with him, but I had to be honest and tell him the truth. I did convey that I was facing a similar problem myself and had no extra cash to spare.

In retrospect, I realize I neglected to attend financial literacy classes. Tantamount to the thought, "I won't be here long, so why bother?" While I initially assumed they wouldn't be directly relevant to my situation, I now recognize the valuable insights and skills they can provide for making informed budgetary decisions.

There are enough stories about this issue. My story goes like this.

There is a way you tend to discuss your financial status with your inner circle of friends. Well, I could get up to 200,000 from the various mobile apps I use. And even though that might not be substantial for those who have ten times that amount as their credit card limit, it meant a lot to me. You use it as a way to show off. Just to let your friends know that, hey, "Niko na pesa kushinda babako, kaskie vibaya huko kwenu." The bots translated it to, "I've got more money than your dad, sorry for your troubles." You do so in a subtle way because you know the kind of friends you have and the social circles you belong to.

The notion that money is the root cause of all evil isn't unfounded. Before you know it, you begin lending to acquaintances, starting with one friend. You take loans from digital loan apps at the standard interest rate, but you tack on a convenience fee for yourself, considering you are the one facilitating the loan. It turns lucrative, you extend more loans. Meanwhile, you neglect to save any of the funds for unforeseen circumstances. Soon you are caught up in a debt spiral that you can't escape. You find yourself ensnared in the web of debt as well.

As more friends learn about your lending activities, they approach you for loans, knowing you can easily get a facility from the digital loan apps. You are more of a middleman. Capitalizing on this platform, you've transformed into a lender. Experiencing success with one loan recovery fuels your belief that you can gradually scale this venture and achieve passive income. While others toil, you find the funds coming your way effortlessly, akin to receiving a reward on a silver platter. It comes with risks, as you're well aware. However, you convey the crucial terms of the agreement even without a signed contract, relying on trust that the borrowed amount will be repaid.

Early on, you yield favorable results and become buoyant. You extend loans up to 100,000 and occasionally invest your salary because your borrowers are consistently repaying them. Everything is progressing smoothly, and within months, you experience a staggered income flow that varies with your loan cycles. In certain instances, you don't even need to settle with the loan app; a simple request prompts your borrower to repay and take out another loan. This is another red flag because you are bypassing your agreed-upon terms.

A significant number of individuals find themselves ineligible for loans due to their creditworthiness, and that's where you see an opportunity. Armed with a background in finance, you understand the crucial role credit scores play. If you have a clean record, you can borrow more money without any hassle, as credit reference bureaus cannot identify you as a defaulter. Exploiting this situation, you take advantage of your favorable credit standing to secure additional loans from other lenders.

You discover you can leverage your strong credit history by borrowing responsibly and repaying loans on time, which unlocks access to larger loans progressively. Prompt payment becomes your priority. Whenever you extend a loan to someone, you diligently track their payday and consistently remind them to settle the debt once their salary is received. This approach becomes instrumental in effectively managing and clearing your debts with digital lenders.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted many people's ability to work and repay loans. A couple of your clients end up affected. Some got better jobs elsewhere, and some just quit—the ones who had a brick-and-mortar mentality. This caused disruptions with digital loan providers due to missed payments. Then the incessant bloodcurdling calls from these Shylocks started streaming in, like a poisonous inspiration, prompting you to devise a strategy to deter them. Meme lords even recreated a joke about these agents. You start making token payments of 1–10 shillings and would then request that they verify if you have settled the debt. This approach helped create a temporary buffer against the persistent calls. What sticks in your mind quite clearly is you paid 1 shilling against a backdrop of a 50k loan.

Yap, that's the situation you find yourself in. Despite meticulous due diligence, falling prey to scams is a stark reality. It becomes even more disheartening when the perpetrators are individuals you had placed trust in. Yet, even the most reputable financial institutions aren't immune to the craftiness of con artists. They package themselves adeptly to leave no room for doubt and create a false sense of trust, only to vanish unexpectedly. The aftermath involves substantial losses with no trace. You are thus left to shoulder that burden. This underscores the challenge of distinguishing genuine intentions from fraudulent ones when dealing with people. Even the most careful assessments can sometimes be deceived.

Indeed, the allure of money is nearly universal. We enjoy flaunting it. Surprisingly, even those with higher incomes often find themselves entangled in a web of debt and frustration. Despite the abundance of financial coaches, a significant number of individuals still live beyond their means, a trend likely to endure. The belief that more money leads to a better life remains pervasive, prompting people to seek loans even when faced with challenges in repayment.

The experience has taught you that money remains the most influential medium in people's interactions. Despite some individuals refusing to repay, the constant requests for money persist. However, due to those past challenges, you decide to close down your informal lending business. Henceforth, you diligently work on servicing the debt, but at your own pace and terms. Recognizing that life must continue, you taken a more measured approach to financial dealings, prioritizing your well-being and stability. Kwani!

Know your status in this life

How does it feel to have no facial hair as a man? High five!  The beardless gang need not concern themselves with the hassle required to be in tip-top shape. You lucky ducks don't have to deal with the whole beard drama: ingrown hairs, dry skin, itchiness, or patchy hair growth. Just keep your scalp hair lookin' good, and that's it! You rock if you are equally blessed with baldness or hair that remains below a predetermined threshold.

Man, this world is super materialistic, you know? Like, you have to engage in daily labour to make ends meet, just to cover your basic needs and perhaps splurge on a few ones that pop up because of what society expects.

Don't stress about those who inherit wealth from their ancestors; it's not like they can freely spend on whatever they fancy. Most likely, their predecessors had some foresight and engaged estate planners to prevent them from squandering their hard-earned fortune. Thus, they need to be cautious in their expenditures to ensure the preservation of wealth for upcoming generations.

Despite having a guaranteed basic income and social status, individuals in this position must actively seek opportunities to grow their wealth. Otherwise, they might need to settle for the modest earnings they currently receive, as inherited wealth tends to be protective against extravagant expenditures.

Over the past weekend, I had the opportunity to engage in a pep talk, and a notable takeaway was the emphasis placed on financial success, which I find problematic. In contemporary times, there's a universal notion that success is often measured by one's financial capacity and the ability to make significant investments. The verbatim is that money talks.

A common belief across socioeconomic classes is that increased wealth directly correlates to a superior life. Another dangerous assumption. This materialistic fixation influences social dynamics, with families often prioritizing financial security over other factors in potential partners. It's common for fathers not to want their daughters to marry men who have nothing. Placing so much pressure on would-be suitors. A fellow online said that love does not exist in marriage. If you are a penniless fellow, beware; your chances of enjoying a royal life are slim if you don't work extra hard.

For example,  consider a scenario of a parent with a child in a high-cost private school. The reality is that if you have financial means, you will be favored. Schools are well aware of this dynamic, and they tend to prioritize parents who readily align with them when faced with new monetary demands. In such situations, the consensus of a few influential parents is often sufficient to approve proposals. The onus is given to parents who align with the institution's stance. Other less assertive parents are expected to fall in line, concurring merely because it is the anticipated response. And in most cases, "shape up or ship out."

The proverb goes, "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Which emphasizes the importance of education. It's important to acknowledge that success in the real world is influenced by a couple of factors beyond academic credentials. Yet, there are many smart and educated folks out there who don't know how to earn money and end up being clowns and 'court jesters' for those who do. Still, many educated individuals contribute significantly to society through diverse pursuits, while others pursue financial goals through various means. The undeniable truth is that the elderly have accumulated wealth at the expense of the young. They are the ones who hold power and influence over the opportunities and outcomes of the younger generation.

The standard norm in our current society is that we have been biased to value individuals who can provide timely financial support to address pressing needs. We always have some financial challenges to overcome. Ideas are nice, but they don't pay the bills. If you don't have money to contribute, you might feel left out or ignored, because we value tangible results more than anything. There are instances where personal finances may not be readily available. However, if your position ensures a network of individuals capable of fundraising to support your objectives, it becomes essential to leverage this network effectively. It's why some people usually want to be influential.

People acquire their wealth through both legitimate and shady means. However, it's important to remember the saying, "A fool and his money are soon parted." Keep in mind that proposing ideas to someone with limited education and insufficient financial backing may not yield significant results unless your financial status demonstrates credibility.

You can tell a wealthy man from a mile away. Just pay attention to the accolades and discussions of accomplishments from those who admire him. You'll be convinced in no time. The man's car, his home, his investments, and his kids' school are all signs of his success. Even the beverages stocked in his house serve as additional indicators of his affluence.

Every individual deserves to be treated with respect, irrespective of their background. It's unfair to silence someone who has earned his initial million. Our evaluation of ideas should be based on their merit, not the financial status of the person putting them forward.

I don't mean to be rude, but most of us haven't earned a million, myself included. The traditional expectation was to go to school and obtain a lucrative job afterward, and then your financial tribulations would be over. That doesn't work out in the current dispensation. Nevertheless, you have to remain optimistic and look for opportunities to improve your circumstances.

Despite our interactions with individuals of various financial backgrounds, one undeniable reality is that without financial resources, one must either follow the conventional route or adopt an aggressive approach, regardless of age, to earn money—whether the path chosen is questionable or honest. Ultimately, money tends to attract friends and allies.

Ready, Set, Checkbox! Do you have a Hack?

Is it true that music is what mathematics dreams of being? Surely, that is sweet melody for the cochlea. Otherwise, it would have been a calculation.

Where should I start? That's the lingering question at the back of my mind. The proverbial saying about curiosity and what led the feline astray comes to mind, but let's set that aside for now. A song can be fleeting or echo through generations. There are those tunes that hit you once, dazzle for a season, and then fade away like summer's fireflies. Their message became a fad, leaving you tapping your feet and nodding your head for a brief moment before moving on to other melodies.

But there's another kind of song—the ageless kind. These melodies resonate across time, they defy trends and capture your heart with their timeless echo. They have become part of our collective memory, our playlist, woven into the fabric of our lives. Perhaps it's the lyrics, the tune, or the emotions they evoke—the reasons vary. Regardless, these songs remain etched in our souls long after other tunes have faded away.

Each of us is granted the same 24 hours in a day, and how we choose to spend that time defines our journey. Each sunrise ushers in the potential for new epiphanies, waiting to be unearthed through our active engagement with the world. Nature nurtures, and there's a distinct beauty in subtly achieving a goal without overt effort, as well as in allowing nature to take its course while you pursue your objectives.

In recent weeks, I've been exploring the factors that distinguish consistently successful individuals from those in pursuit of excellence. It's not a matter of time, luck, or education; rather, it's the sheer determination to succeed that sculpts one's perspective on the world. Some achieve effortlessly, propelled by passion. Others face hurdles and have to "push through the wall," fueled by a calculated drive to overcome them. However, the fervor and fire in our hearts to overcome obstacles propels us to persistently push forward.

I'm the kind of person who revels in the spontaneity of my decisions. As much as I plan, it doesn't fit neatly into my schedule. It's the unexpected phone call to a friend, the impromptu detour through the park on a sunny afternoon while on a random walk, or the surprise visit to a relative. It's the little things that count.

Life, with its inherent unpredictability, offers an adventure in the unexpected outcomes of our actions. There's a natural inclination to be carefree. We are naturally wired to abhor obligation. More so, that which tends to be pushy. It's the reason we dislike bosses, who impose rules and regulations that seem to force us into a robotic mindset, even though, at times, such structure is necessary for progress. Many of us resist accountability, particularly when it is self-imposed. Our lives lack a clearly defined destination, and we don't meticulously plan every step of the way.

Listening to people's stories, it has become evident that incorporating "checkboxes" can serve as a valuable tool for assessing your progress. While I won't cite specific examples, it's clear that if you aspire to succeed, daily reminders about what you should do in your life are essential.

It's equally crucial to establish a foundation when starting from scratch, rather than simply picking up without a robust base to shield you from life's uncertainties. You can't afford to be rigid.

Some daily tasks may seem insignificant but contribute to the overall overarching objective. Additionally, there are short-term goals that need to be met. For instance, my weekly goal is to write a blog. However, I have not laid out a plan for the next 3 to 6 months about what to write since it would stifle my creative juices. On an annual scale, my goal is to have at least 50 posts, even if I take leave at the end of the year. I would have asked about yours if I were writing a motivational book. Am not!

A couple of factors contribute to our success. Key among them is the ability to visualize if you are making any inroads or not. If you know you quit easily, then you need to work on your patience. Once you achieve a milestone, just tick that checkbox!

I don't have a checklist, and I didn't plan to have one. This blog post has been a revelation. I need to have one.

I am the wishy-washy type! I thought I could write on weekends and have my article ready to post by Tuesday or Wednesday. But guess what? All I have now are vibes and "inshallah!"  I not only disregard routine; instead, I haphazardly follow my indecisively self-set preferences.

Most people don't like to be confronted by direct questions, especially from strangers. Yet if you ask, you gain insight into the lens through which they view the world and can empathize with their experiences. Sometimes, I yearn to be a curious questioner, engaging others in conversation and actively listening to their stories. People crave the opportunity to share their narratives rather than merely hearing someone else's opinion. After all, life without stories would be utterly devoid of meaning!

Hasta La Vista, Baby.
